They said that we called
each other Brother because
we didn't know who our
daddies were. We listened
and stopped doing it. That
was our unity.
They told us that we were
ugly and foul. We believed
them and straightened our
hair and put on their
makeup. That was our pride.
They said that we were boys
not men. We began to tell
our young men the same
thing all their lives. That was
our humility.
They told us that men like
Bobby and Huey were Public
Enemy no. 1. So we didn't
join them. That was our
power.
They showed us that having
a lot of children was bad. So
we began to sterilize
ourselves. That was our
future.
They told us our culture
promoted violence and
ignorance. So instead of
nourishing it we admonish it.
That was our legacy
They told us that the great
Kings and Queens of Africa
weren't really Black. We
accepted it as history. That
was our pedigree
They told us that things
would never change and
would remain the same until
the end of time. Then we
realized they lied.
